The NEW TR3 Heavy Duty Tru-Trac(tm)
This newest member of the Tru-Trac™ family is an integrated heavy duty encoder and spring loaded measuring wheel assembly all in one, easy-to-use, compact unit. Created for use in either a single, or optional dual-wheel format, the TR3 Heavy Duty Tru-Trac™ is a versatile solution for tracking position, distance or velocity over a wide variety of surfaces in almost any industrial application.

EPC's new TR3 shown with optional wheels
Designed with a simple-to-adjust torsion arm, the TR3 can be mounted in any orientation, even upside-down. Using all metal construction with a tough powder coated finish, the TR3 will take on the most demanding industrial environments. But don’t let the tough exterior fool you, inside is a high performance encoder capable of operating speeds up to 3000 feet per minute in environments ranging from -40° C to +100° C.
The TR3 is constructed for applications that require a heavy duty encoder that can also offer versatility, and accuracy. Common applications include lumber, corrugated, converting, metal roll forming, paper monitoring, glue dispensing, linear material monitoring, conveyor systems, printing, labeling, mining, and construction.
With six different connector orientations and a variety of connector types, wiring the TR3 is very flexible, allowing the perfect fit into your environment, your way.
Additional accessories for the TR3 are designed to, again, better fit into your special environment. An optional double wheel pivot allows the TR3 free rotation that maintains equal pressure on both wheels, accommodating uneven or angled surfaces and mounting misalignments.

In The Beginning: The Original TR1 Tru-Trac™
Monitoring speed, velocity or position has never been easier or more cost effective.

The spring-loaded torsion arm provides a simple-to-adjust torsion load, allowing the Model TR1 mounting in any orientation. The threaded shaft on the pivot axis is field reversible, providing mounting access from either side. The housing is a durable, conductive composite material that will eliminate static build up.
The TR1 is an ideal solution for countless applications such as web tension control, paper monitoring, glue dispensing, linear material monitoring, conveyor systems, printing, labeling, and document handling.
The TR1 can be mounted using an optional angle mounting bracket allowing versatile mounting positions and easy installation.

TR1 Wheels (Urethane, Knurled, Hard Anodized Knurled)
To fulfill the unique requirements of our customers, we designed several wheel applications. A selection of urethane, knurled, and anodized knurled wheels increases the versatility of the TR1, making it one of the most innovative and versatile encoders on the market today.

The Second Generation: TR2 Tru-Trac™
Although very similar to the Model TR1, the Model TR2 incorporates a pinion gear that follows a rack that eliminates the worry of back-lash or slippage. With use of the rack and pinion gear system, encoder readings are obtained with repeatable positioning providing excellent accuracy. Racks are ordered in varying lengths and, with the accessory spacer block, multiple lengths of rack can be joined to meet your application needs. EPC offers two different types of racks for the TR2: A stainless steel rack that carries a linear speed of 400 feet per minute, and a flexible acetal rack that carries a linear speed of 200 feet per minute.

Like the original Tru-Trac™, the TR2 has a spring loaded torsion arm, giving it all the flexibility and maneuverability of the original TR1. It can be installed in any orientation, even upside down, making installation possibilities endless. The threaded shaft on the pivot axis is field reversible, providing mounting access from either side, and the durable conductive composite housing material will eliminate static build up. For simplified installations, an angle mounting bracket is available separately.

Racks for the TR2 include flexible acetal or stainless steel
EPC’s goal is to offer the best in encoder designs and engineering at competitive prices. As the creators of the original Tru-Trac™, EPC offers innovative technology, and superior designs with each generation of the Tru-Trac™ series.

Behind The Scenes: TR3 Brings Help to Corrugated Line
During testing, they found that the finished sheet length was varying over time. Further investigation revealed the cause. Seams in the cardboard passing under the encoder wheel would cause the wheel to jump and lose contact with the surface. The encoder providing length data to the cutting mechanism was missing counts occasionally, which resulted in finished length variations that were out of specification. While the machine’s existing encoder and wheel system worked perfectly with other applications, this particular material was presenting a challenge.

Hipsher Tool, manufacturer of the cutting equipment, immediately began working on a solution. They contacted C&E Sales, a Dayton, OH based distributor for Encoder Products Company. After consulting with EPC, C&E’s Sales Engineer Jeff Ligon recommended the new TR3 Heavy Duty TruTrac™. The TR3’s sturdy all-metal housing and integrated spring-loaded pivot arm were key features that appealed to Eric Flory, the Hipsher Tool Engineering manager tasked with solving the problem. The heavier housing and stiff internal spring provided an increased down-pressure more than adequate to offset the “jolt” caused by the cardboard seams passing underneath the wheel. Dual urethane 12” wheels were specified along with a line drive output and CPR resolution that matched the previous encoder counts per inch.
After the TR3 was installed and testing completed, Hipsher’s customer reported that cut length was spot-on and production was up and running. Another successful day at the office!

Linear
Enter stage right: EPC’s Tru-Trac™ family of measuring wheel encoders! The tough Tru-Trac’s™ are the perfect solution to your linear measuring requirements. With their proven strength, compact size, versatility, accuracy, and optional accessories, the Tru-Trac™ family gives the security and piece of mind needed to keep your application producing successfully for many years.
Typical linear encoders are expensive and need a very level, straight track. These encoders tend to be fragile, and are limited in length. These type of linear encoders are not always conducive to all application environments, especially in harsh areas, which makes reliability and precision not always a service these encoders provide. The Tru-Trac™ family is an inexpensive way to solve certain linear encoder applications and take on others that traditional linear scale encoders simply cannot do. They are not limited by length, can accurately work on a variety of non-level surfaces, and are available in rugged packages, such as the newest member, the TR3.
When selecting a measuring wheel encoder, it is important that it can both physically and electrically handle the speed of your application. For example, EPC’s model TR1 can handle applications with linear speeds up to 3000 feet per minute and electrical frequencies up to 1 MHz. It is important that the wheels of the encoder maintain constant contact with the measured material without slipping. A measuring wheel that has a built in torsion spring will provide consistent contact pressure. If the spring is strong enough, such as in the Tru-Trac™ family, the encoder assembly can even be installed upside down, significantly increasing installation options.
Also increasing the value of the Tru-Trac™ is the ability to configure to your special needs the number of output channels, output type, connector type and orientation, frequency capability, and accepts a variable voltage input of 5-28 VDC. The TR1 and TR3 also have a variety of wheels to choose from while the TR2 offers a steel or flexible acetal rack for use in applications.

Dear Customer,
"We've got connections". In the social scene, that phrase can provide exclusive access to people and places. When it comes to encoders, having the right connections is a challenge for some manufacturers. But at EPC, our customers have a wide variety of connector needs due to specific application requirements, the need to match an existing installation, or due to the variety of connectors used by competing brands we are asked to replace. That's why we continue to expand the connector options available with our products. Some recent additions:
Stainless Steel M12: Now available for stainless steel encoder Models 802S, 858S, 865T and with the corrosion-resistant Model 25TC.
9-pin D-sub: Now available with the 25T. Also a configurable option on Models 702, 725, 775, 776, and 225.
Bayonet-style 10-pin: Now available on Model 25T. Also a configurable option on Models 702, 725, and 260.
Body Mount Connectors: Now available on Model TR3. Originally released with only the cable option, body mount connectors were always part of the plan. Connector options include 5-pin/8-pin M12 and 6-pin/7-pin/10-pin MS styles.
Custom Connectors: Don't see what you need on our data sheet? Contact EPC Sales and we'll review your application for potential Custom Connectorization. While we can't guarantee we can apply every connector for every occasion, we'll certainly consider every option on the table.
TR3 ADDITIONS: We've now added a Dual Wheel Pivot. This configurable option is desirable for dual wheel TR3 applications. It allows both wheels to remain in contact with the rolling surface at all times, in spite of surface irregularities, which is critical for accurate measurement. Also, Technical Bulletin TB526 offers important guidelines and tips for installing the TR3 Heavy Duty Tru-Trac(tm). For example, do you know you can adjust the connector location to six different positions? |

Dear Valued Customer,
The food and beverage industry is filled with nasty chemicals.
Not in the food products (we trust!), but necessary to sanitation of the processing and packaging equipment: sodium hypochlorite, ammonia, nitrates, acids, bases, etc. Not only do germs and pathogens dislike these chemicals, they are tough on equipment as well, including encoders.
